Mets, Jays, and Rockies all win tonight, so the Phils don't lose any ground.

'The Youngs' (both will likely be seen again in the playoffs)

D. Young (Rays)

.237/.326/.368 (.694 OPS) with 1 HR in 43 PAs

Unlike the Broad Street Brain Trust, D. Young has only played 1 inning in the OF and been a DH exclusively.

M. Young (Dodgers)

.385/.375/.462 (.837 OPS) with 0 HR in 40 PAs

Played PT for the Dodgers at 1B/3B and been a bat off the bench.

"Rollins is a constant vocal example."

In other words, he talks a lot?

Don't need no jibber-jabbin fool in the leadoff spot with a low OBP

yep...free AEC is much more annoying than Jake. at least Jake was coherent and wasn't a complete moron in constantly screwing up the font

Sounds like someone is hoping against hope that the "Wheeze Kids" will somehow bring one more WS to Philly before they ride off into the sunset (or join the Miami Marlins).

More like with the Wheeze Kids the nucleus they building around might be .500 team instead of what the Marlins are now.

Its good to see Ryno demand more from Rollins. At times i felt he could do a little more than what he was giving us. Having said that I hope Sandberg doesnt hope Rollins will morph into a .290BA/.360 OBP guy.

i heard barkan quote rube as saying that he was not "sold" on ruf and asche and that both would have to fight for their jobs in ST. then barkan teased that he would say after the break who rube said he definitely wants back. then i missed it as i took a peek at the fool, ted cruz on c-span2. anybody hear who rube really does want back?

PLM: on the HR derby it was mentioned that the optimal angle for hitting home runs was 30 degress, striking the ball 1/4" below its equator. this was jimmy's goal in most all ABs. long after the power was mostly gone. looks like "Gab" (ryno's first nickname as a phillie because he seldom spoke) has straightened him out on that.

Hopefully so bulit i read and saw accounts of Rollins having the idea that he was a pure power hitter.

Rube better pencil in Cody at third. Freddy G should be super utility guy next yr. SP pen and RH bat

Steve Carlton thought age was just a number and it depended how you took care of your body and trained.

And then baseball reached up and smacked him in the face.

Heather there is always Moyer.

Hey, Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens managed to stare down Father Time as well. Those guys were the best in the game when most players are collecting pensions!

I really hope they finish strong so they can get the 12th or 13th pick next year instead of the 7th or 8th.

Because that matters.

***Baseball today is so statistically driven that experience so often becomes grossly overlooked***

When does your job in the Phillies FO start? Have you given Comcast your 2 weeks notice yet?

April - .707
May - .716
June - .642
July - .591
August - .556
September - .861

OK, so Jordan Hall thinks because Rollins' has had a good September so far that he's "not done just yet"?

When I look at Rollins' monthly OPS, which I posted above, I have to state that one good month does "not convince me just yet".

But, hey, if Hall wants to make that statement based on that small a sample size, he can sure put his credibility on the line if he wants.

i heard barkan quote rube as saying that he was not "sold" on ruf and asche ...

It's my opinion that r00b plain dislikes Ruf, & I doubt anything Darin does will ever be able to change that. So far as Asche is concerned, I'm not "sold", either ... but if it's a question of Cody vs. the next Polanco/M. Young, I'll take Asche any day.

Step 1: Make controversial statement
Step 2: Increase page clicks
Step 3: ???
Step 4: Profit

Halladay is a pretty good example that age is not just a number. Everybody is different, but no one thinks their performance is going to decline until one day it does.

Rollins & Utley are probably going to fall into the "year to late" category vs. letting someone go a "year too early". That said, the offensive bar for middle infielders isn't so high that the duo can't be serviceable. I just don't think anymore all-star appearances are in their future.

jordan hall: "But why not reshape around Rollins and Utley? That's the vision of GM Ruben Amaro Jr. and what’s wrong with it?"

2012 Phillies
2013 Phillies

That's why.

"Both Rollins and Utley will be 35 when 2014 spring training rolls around. ...and building another nucleus around them may not be a bad idea."

So this is what BL has come to.

Monday evening, ESPN Classic aired Steve Carlton's 300th victory from 1983, a September game on the road against the Cardinals, using the Channel 29 feed with Harry and Whitey.

It was a pleasure to once again listen to Harry in his prime, with Whitey announcing birthdays, wedding anniversaries, and transplanted residents visiting the booth.

Two things of note:

- Harry said that Carlton wanted to pitch five more seasons. He did just that... but not at the performance level he probably anticipated through ages 39-43.

- Harry and Whitey knew how to broadcast a televised game. Unlike today's bozos, they would let the pictures do the talking with periods of silence.

I hope TBag DVR'd it like I did. He could learn a lot.

Bizarre afflictions aside, Halladay has been & still is giving me a strong Carlton vibe. Lefty was also fanatical about fitness, but fitness couldn't trump age. I'll always prefer Mike Schmidt's abrupt retirement to the painful, drawn out process of watching a former great who cannot let go.

Amen. Between the "new school" of sports broadcasting & the advent of the 3-man booth (plus useless roving reporters!) no one ever just shuts their f*cking yap & allows the sights & sounds of the game to tell the story anymore.

Isn't it amazing that Franzke and Anderson on the radio yap much less than the TV side. They should be simulcast and the tv guys should simply be fired. The money saved could be given to Murphy to retire so he didn't have to act like a moron in the stands.

That job in the stands is basically a chance to put a pretty woman on the broadcast. And the Phillies screwed that up as well.

I have to say again that I love the Roku MLB app. I haven't listened to anything but the radio broadcasters since i got it. The game is much more enjoyable. Even though the Phillies stink and Rube still runs them. I had resorted to the visiting broadcasters before I got the ROKU because neither of my TV apps for MLB had the radio broadcast option. I especially made a point of listening to the opposition during the middle three innings as the Phillies broadcast the TBag and Sarge is the most unbearable thing I've ever heard.

I highly recommend that if you get your games over the internet (live out of town) that you get the Roku box so you can have the radio broadcast while watching on a real TV. I will never listen to TBag or Sarge again. Such a relief.

COLE HAMELS 214 innings

CLIFF LEE 214.2 innings

Wear out those $25mil arms in this important season!

Arnold and Sly are still making movies, too. They're not very good and the box office is in the dumpster. We've seen their acts before and now they're stale.

It should have been "hasta lavista, baby!"

Are there any diamond blue chip prospects in next years entry draft? Where are the Phils currently standing in draft position?

Thanks in advance.
