repost:

in terms of arbitration, Phil Hughes and Kyle Kendrick are very comparable. Win/loss, IP, GS, relievers, ERA, WHIP are all very close.

Hughes will be a FA this year after getting 7.2M in his final arb year. KK is a year older and has a tad edge in wins/ip, so a little bit above $7.2M should be his number most likely.

He and Hughes would be the only FA SP under the age of 30 if he was to be non tendered.

Doc in a day game at Wrigley: Guaranteed Win.

Doc and heat,bad combo.
When does Rube announce a 2 year deal for MYoung?

Phils scored 33 runs vs the Cubs earlier this month in a 3 game series. o/u is 9 today, one of their higher totals in awhwile.

Doc won't make it out of the 3rd. Who disagrees?

This is such a sham. One of Ruben's most pathetic moves letting him rush back for this ridiculous audition.

Well, they kinda rushed him back thanks to the Martin FAIL/18 inning game. Otherwise, he was making a start in AA last week.

Kinda hard to blame Rube totally on that...other than for having assembled an Organization that has zero depth necessitating such a move in the first place.

So actually it's easy to blame Rube, isn't it? NEPP, you're right that they needed a starter and had few choices, but what exactly is the game plan here for Doc? They shortened his rehab coming off major surgery. He's a FA so he has his choice of teams. And there's absolutely no reason to sign him for next year unless you are expecting him to be cooked. If he's part of their offseason plan, I don't know if I can watch next season.

By the way, what the heck are they doing with Adam Morgan? He left the game in the 2nd last night, and his struggles since coming of the DL have been more than worrisome. He's clearly injured, how does are GM remain the only one blind to it?

He's careening towards non-prospect, surgery status. FAIL

Morgan was never more than a 5th starter anyway...per most scouting reports.

Not true at all. Many scouting reports had him mid-rotation ceiling. Here's just one:

http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/adam-morgan-could-help-the-phillies-rotation-soon/

Let me know if you'd like more.

Will This be the game docs head explodes?

Nepp, let me ask you this: even if Morgan was nothing more than a 5th starter, is this how you would manage his career and return from injury? Is this not horrific management of a young player?

2013 OPS Rank by Position in MLB

1B
RF
LF
3B
CF
2B
C
SS

Will be the 7th year in a row that RF outhits LF. A rare occurrence where a more demanding defensive position has been more productive on offense.

I wouldn't do what they're doing with him currently.

nepp: morgan was roundly praised as a mid rotation type by basically every outlet I ever read.

Lots of good RF right now and not so many good LFs...kinda like when the median production for 3B has almost been as bad as SS in a few of the previous seasons.

NEPP-
You need to follow the minors better if you're going to offer an opinion.

nepp: 3B has been ~50 points above SS in every single year of the past decade (and most likely forever) except for 2011 when it was 10 points ahead.

"Kinda hard to blame Rube totally on that...other than for having assembled an Organization that has zero depth necessitating such a move in the first place."

In fairness, the alternative to Halladay would have been, essentially, our No. 9 starter. Our 6th stater to start the season (Pettibone) was injured, and our 7th starter (Cloyd) was forced to pitch 5 innings of relief one day before his scheduled start because our 8th starter (Martin) couldn't make it out of the 1st inning. How many organizations have a viable 9th starter?

How sad is it that Roy Halladay is our 9th starter?

Here's hoping Doc doesn't melt in the Wrigley heat, like last time...

Good news, it's only supposed to be 93 today in Chicago. Shouldn't be an issue.

I agree with BAP.

And our 5th starter is also injured. Our 4th starter may or may not be suffering lingering effects from a concussion. (Or he may just be "not horrible enough to be gone".)

Good thing Hamels and Lee have remained healthy! Or we might have had to put Casper into the rotation.

***You need to follow the minors better if you're going to offer an opinion.***

I recall some reports saying "no better than #4" and others being more pessimistic.

***You need to follow the minors better if you're going to offer an opinion.***

2011 was the year I was referring to there.

It's Cliff Lee's birthday today.

Does that mean he's allowed to throw sunflower seeds at his teammates for the day?

NO.

I think you tender KK. He can also be used in the bullpen. Versatility, you know.

In Rube's world, if you're Versatile you're never "horrible enough to be gone."

I hope Roy is drinking some pickle juice today.

Tendering KK depends on a ton of factors to include (but not be limited to):

1. Determining how much of his 2nd half swoon is due to the concussion
2. Are they resigning Doc?
3. Is MAG still a possibility?

I think you tender KK. He can also be used in the bullpen. Versatility, you know.

Versatility is overrated. He'd also make a fine, sturdy doorstop, but that's no reason to shell out $8+ million.

So if you don't render Kendrick, basically you have Lee and Hamels and 3 rotation spots to fill.

Not so sure I love the idea of Amaro going out and getting 3 pitchers via trade or FA signing.

I'm against rendering KK. He seems like a nice guy.

As soon as Doc leaves the game behind 6 in the 3rd inning we are going to have the 4 year /65 million extension ceremony.

"Not so sure I love the idea of Amaro going out and getting 3 pitchers via trade or FA signing."

Assuming Pettibone is healthy on opening day, it would be 2.

Seeing as how the Phillies aren't going to be a threat to anything but the sanity of their fans come '14, I'd rather the club find some new pitchers than choose to overpay one they already know all too well.

G-Town, my comment about KK was very much tongue-in-cheek.

How high do we think Doc's RFF gets today?

limoguy: As was mine. I don't even want Kendrick back as a doorstop.

iceman: agreed. At this moment, it doesn't look like he'll be blocking any prospects or anything like that.

I say tender him because I don't think $7.5M is really going to make/break this team next year. If he just pitch to his career 96 ERA+ for 3 months in 2014, then I would think he'd have some trade value at the least.

Ricky Nolasco, who made over $11M, returned 3 of the dodgers' top 30 prospects, albeit among the bottom 30. Scott Feldman returned a few live arms in Arrietia and Strop. Bud Norris went for LJ Hoes and a low level LHP starter.

I just don't see how saving $7.5M and losing a backend starter that you need to replace is really going to help their chances that much. Keeping him at least gives you the chance to possibly flip at a later date.

I can't imagine Doc going past four today, unless he is hitting all of his spots with consistency. Doc + not hitting spots + 90 plus heat + 55 plus humidity + Chicago + Grinding = meltdown.

$7.5 million is likely the difference between going with a real OF and another Delmon Young type option.

Maybe the Phils put Doc in the ice tub while they're are at bat. Maybe the Cubs will counter that by walking him intentionally and making him run the bases.

limo: That would bust up his 0-13, 13 K line at the plate.

I wonder if Doc would be allowed to wear one of those water-cooling vests they make ...

http://www.amazon.com/Chill-Its-6665-Evaporative-Cooling-Vest/dp/B002BDU3OW/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1377884531&sr=8-4&keywords=water+cooling+vest

Think that would be allowed?

Cubs went from -115 to around -135 over last few hours, yet 65% of bets are going on philly. Means smart money must be coming in heavy on Chicago.

It's a bazillion degrees at Wrigley and Roy comes out to warm up with sleeves on. Hoo boy

* * *
Yeah, this should end well.

They probably saw the temperature and Doc's long-sleeves.

By making himself believe that there is no heat, Roy is no longer affected by mere weather conditions.

Maybe this will help?

They do have a cooling room behind pizza-oven dugout now, however, at Wrigley

NEW YORK -- The Philadelphia Phillies are practicing medicine without a license this series.

First, Roy Halladay offered elbow advice to Matt Harvey at Terry Collins’ request.

Now, David Wright has revealed Michael Young approached him this series about how to handle a hamstring tear.

Sorted.

GTown- what pitchers would you suggest bringing in to fill the three empty slots in the rotation?

From the Official Twitter acct. of the Phillies: " What do Big Data and Baseball have in common? http://atmlb.com/15EVzy6 "

They're asking because they honestly don't know.

Why does Doc insist on the sleeves in the heat?!!?!?!?!?

Whatever it is Sandberg was expecting out of Jimmy in the 2 hole, he isn't getting it.

Pop up Rollins, the best.

Thats cause Jimmy is just cooked anymore as a decent player.

That leadoff hit was a rare thing. The fact that he was still there 3 outs later wasn't.

84 mph on his cutter?

Rollins in the 2-hole is asinine. It always has been, always will be. A case can be made for nearly every other spot in the lineup. The two hole is worst spot for him.

Rollins in the lineup is...

Ah, why even bother finishing that statement.

I think I finally understand Sandberg's reasoning: Jimmy Rollins bats in the 2-hole because J-Roll is a #2 hole.

Jimmy is more of a 6th or 7th type hitter now.
84 on the cutter?...that puts his top speed around 88

Bandbox.

This is going to be a long game. If Bernadina didn't save him with those 2 excellent grabs, that game would have looked a lot different.

Maybe Jimmy's next first pitch pop-up will blow out too.

The velocity isn't coming back very quickly for Doc. He's still sitting at the same level as he was in his first rehab start nearly a month ago now.

Not exactly encouraging.

Rollins belongs in the 11-hole.

Don't let the radar gun fool you. Doc is 'sneaky fast.'

Is he a high motor guy?

Cubs at -110 were an easy bet when I saw the weather forecast earlier this week. Doc only looks 'flushed' and not 'Fujushima' red yet.

Who was it that said Dom Brown looks like a "giraffe on acid" playing left field?

Jim Salisbury ‏@JSalisburyCSN 3m
Changes coming in Phils’ player-development system http://bit.ly/175yGQD

Nutshell: Gorman Heimueller, the organization’s minor-league pitching coordinator, will not have his contract renewed for the 2014 season.

Also RAJ said: "We need to get better across the board. If you aren't getting better, you're getting worse."

Upsides: Doc seems to be working fast, looks comfortable and is hitting his spots.

That's nice to see.

And he hits a guy as I hit enter.

And another...

I will never compliment Doc again.

How is this even a question anymore?

You say "thanks for your service, Doc, we love you and best of luck" at the end of the season.

We can't seriously be considering relying on him again in the rotation.

hahah @ nepp, posts of the season

Doc may aspire to Be Jamie Moyer, but Jamie never would have done that.

Unless, of course, he was still "hitting his spots" in those two ABs.

Doc hitting those guys was just setting up the possibility of an out at any base.

That 85 mph fastball just got categorized as a changeup by pitch f/x

That's a good sign, right?

I should have picked up Samarzdidzajazja for my fantasy team.

You have to think that the pitching coach was canned due to the staggering inability of this team to teach their pitchers secondary pitches especially their relievers.

Can't be a ringing endorsement either of Billmeyer either though.

Won't shead a tear if Dubee is let go to.

Ryne Sandberg
Barry Bonds
Brady Anderson

***You have to think that the pitching coach was canned due to the staggering inability of this team to teach their pitchers secondary pitches especially their relievers.***

How does it work? Does the entire minor league pitching coach staff report to Dubee or is each level kinda on its own? Dubee seemingly has done a decent job with KK and a couple others (getting good seasons out of Happ, Worley, etc before they turned into pumpkins). But none of our minor leaguers ever seem to develop a 2nd or 3rd pitch.

Dubee was a goner as soon as Cholly was fired. Still think Sciosia is the guy the Phils are going to angle for although if Sandberg has a strong record he will make it tougher to not name him the manager next year.

Will Scioscia get a side job at Limerick Nuclear when he's not actively managing?

Rube must be feeling some heat, so he's going to replace a bunch of underlings that are probably doing what he wants them to do anyway.

Hitting the splitter would appear not to be Dom's strong suit.

Gonna be a 'tip your hat" game again today.

Coming into today's game, since his 1/20 start, Chooch has put up a .300 .342 .415 slash line.

Anyone here still think he's not going to get at least a 2-year offer from someone if he finishes that way?

I don't know, is the 4th inning to early to gently grip the cap between fore-finger and thumb, preparatory to the aforementioned 'tipping'?

***Anyone here still think he's not going to get at least a 2-year offer from someone if he finishes that way?***

I dont think he'll get a 2 year offer at all to be honest...go ahead, ask me why.

There goes Nate Schierholtz. Best there ever was...
