Updates on the Phillies' first three selections in the June draft and other news down on the farm.
- Right-hander Shane Watson, who was taken with the Phillies' first pick (40th overall) has been eased into four games (5 IP) with the Gulf Coast League (GCL) Phillies and has allowed just two hits while striking out seven. He's hitting .258/.349/.444 and has three home runs in his last seven games.
- Rookie ball shortstops then and now: Jimmy Rollins in 1996: 46 games, 20 errors. Roman Quinn in 2012 for Williamsport: 50 games, 22 errors.
- Per Phuture Phillies, Scott Elarton has not won a game in three months and is 0-10 with a 7.19 ERA in his last 17 starts.
- Right-hander Ethan Martin, who was acquired in the Shane Victorino deal, is a perfect 4-0 with a 1.48 ERA in four starts with Reading.
- Also per Phuture Phillies, Tyler Cloyd leads minor league baseball with 15 wins.
- The man who may be deemed the top prospect in the Phillies' system at the end of the season, catcher Tommy Joseph, is hitting .254/.347/.365 in 70 plate appearances with Reading. The 21-year-old catcher went 3-for-3 Monday night.
- J.C. Ramirez has not been scored upon in his last 10 2-3 innings (7 appearances) at Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He's on the 40-man roster and is an option for a September call-up.

I think in Martin and Lindblom that Victorino trade is going to look really good in a few years.

Especially if we are able to re-sign Vic on a good deal in the offseason.

TTI, I you really ready to call the Vic trade a winner based on the sample size of 4 Martin starts?

Wait, why is Rollins still batting leadoff with Pierre in the lineup?
Isn't Rollins OBP still below .300?

awh: Didn't say that did I?
I liked the reports on Martin at the time of the trade. All the experts said he was a pitcher with a high ceiling and he had really good stuff. So far so good, but obviously you need more time.
I am also not in the camp that thinks Lindblom is a bum. A good-albeit in need of some work- young reliever under team control is always good to have.

Liked the pick when it was done. Same people who ripped pick are prob the same ones saying Joe m is not a great manager. Hmm how are those rays doing right now? And how has upton been hitting. If they had a manager who could manage they would be doing really well. Hope these trades pay off for us for once. AA going to be loaded next year. Biddle, Morgan and Martin. As well as may again and Colvin. Farm system could be back on rise.

TTI: I think it all depends on Ethan Martin. I think he's shown enough in the first few games here that he can safely be called a real live prospect, and not just a body that was thrown in.
Lindblom, on the other hand, I'm deeply skeptical of. Maybe I'm biased just because I hate the idea, in the abstract, of trading someone like Victorino for a middle reliever because your bullpen has underperformed, but Lindblom does absolutely nothing for me. He strikes me as a guy who will be here one day and gone the next and no one will remember him. I'm not sure how he's any different than multiple guys we already have, including Schwimmer and Stutes. You say that a young reliever under control is a good thing to have--but we had plenty of those. I fail to see why Lindblom is any different than they are, which is why the Victorino deal will largely be determined by Martin. Lindblom is at this point and projects to be going forward completely fungible.
