from the last thread:

Unikruk: thanks for the link to the Stark article. that's a must read. lots of things to discuss there.

1.61 ERA, eh? Wonder what the Twinkies want for him?

June 8 post:

clout: "The Galvis injury will be a good test of Charlie's acumen. If he starts Fontenot, it will show that he's not the dope a lot of fans claim he is.

If he starts Mini-Mart, it will show he's even stupider than the fans think he is."

June 14 update: Mini-Mart making his 4th straight start at 2nd base.

Do we have a verdict yet?

I'm looking forward to the response on this one.

BAP, sheer unadulterated brilliance. While I've thought it endlessly, it's nice to see someone as esteemed as clout essentially coming to the same conclusion (at least presumably...).

WP/G-Town: I'm still trying to wrap my head around the phrase "even stupider than the fans think he is." It's like saying, "This place is even colder than 0 degrees Kelvin."

b_a_p: If clout deems it so, I'm entirely willing to declare Charlie even dumber than "Absolute Stupid".

A 1.61 ERA. Where did they find this gem?

"Joe Blanton on the mound for the Phillies tonight, & he needs to be ... (long pause) ... better." -Franzke

Billy Batts used to act the way clout does.
Used to....
I know this place upstate. Let me know.

Let's go Phillies!

That's at least the second time this series the Twins announcer has breezily called Rollins "one of the game's best leadoff hitters." Really, how lazy can you get? I mean what basis is there even for saying that? Career .328 OBP, .314 since 2009.

Come on right handed vic!

Yuck

Hey, the inning-ending Victorino! Who coulda seen that coming?

Mini-Mart very nearly threw that ball away. If Thome were an inch shorter, he would have.

Why did I say Thome? Meant Wigginton, of course.

I was going to ask what the odds of a clean first inning for Blanton were. But they were clearly astronomical and now zero.

I'm not watching tonight. Company who flew in, and we're watching our favorite TV show premiere tonight. Burn Notice Thursdays are the only day I miss the Phillies if I can help it.

But I hope Blanton pitches so well, the defense is so unflawed, and the offense produces enough that I say to myself later, darn, I missed a great W!

Phils are +125 tonight. Guess Vegas doesn't like Blanton much either.

"This place is even colder than 0 degrees Kelvin."

Oh yeah, how much colder?

Why do they trot this joker out ever 5 days.. ,

I know we have few alternatives,,

Thanks R00b...

Reverse Jinx?

Good inning by KJ

Trade proposal: Cole to Minny for Poof.

Wiggs!

T-Dub with a nice shot!

Yeah, whatever. Your lousy solo homer doesn't make up for what you did at 3B, Wigginton.

Stark column was great but only one caveat - I highly doubt the intelligence and recall ability of both catchers and pitchers (especially starters) to call the 'correct pitch' (at least statistically) an overwhelming majority of the time.

Less of an idea with reliever since they generally only have 2 pitches they use. Maybe 3. With starters though it isn't uncommon now you have 5-6 pitches they might use including a few different variations of their fastball.

POOF!

Plouffe, it's gone!

Wow, Blanton just threw an 0-2 meatball up there.

Do not give Phillies pitchers a lead. I REPEAT DO NOT GIVE PHILLIES PITCHERS A LEAD.

Kentucky couldn't have placed that on a tee any better for Plouffe. Talk about a fastball that tails right into someone's happy zone.

This pitching is depressing.

would that I could get this pitch-by-pitch vantage point on all phillies games.

has there been an inning where blanton hasn't given the run back or more after we've scored?

Yep, Plouffe definitely has Cody Ross Syndrome. He's got it bad.
Or is it a Brady Anderson virus?

Jeff Schuler: "Spidale replaces Brown in left. Earlier he pulled up running out a grounder and also seemed to have trouble in left."

Sometimes I think it's just never gonna happen for Dom. And by "sometimes" I mean "daily".

Here comes another 2 out RBI for the annoying Carroll.

Is there pitcher in baseball who splits the plate with his pitches more often than Joe Blanton?

Joe Blanton is a power pitcher. He's just not plugged in.

Please, I want Ploop playing 3B on our team.

Five-4-One: I don't know about that but watching Blanton pitch is.

Have to take his SIERA and xFIP numbers with some hesitation because he just gives up HRs at a much higher frequency than a normalized number and has since '09.

I can only imagine if he play at a really HR-friendly stadium in Denver, Cincy, or the new Yankee stadium how many HRs he would give up. My bet is 35-40 HRs which is brutal.

I meant Blanton specifically. However, the rest of them haven't exactly been a joy lately.

fumphis: "That's at least the second time this series the Twins announcer has breezily called Rollins "one of the game's best leadoff hitters." Really, how lazy can you get?"

Even lazier, actually. Tuesday, two days ago, the Twins' announcer described a ground ball "just beyond the reach of Galvis." Cr8p!

Blanton's now t-2nd in NL in HRs allowed with 14 and on pace to give up 35 (a career high).

Re: the trivia question - I think I have a few Paul Thormodsgard baseball cards from the 70's. Must be worth a few cents, literally.

Ageless James !!!

Shoulda walked Thome to get to Vic. Now they're payin' for it. Boom.

If Thome isn't one of your favorite players of all time, you're dead inside.

Omg

I wish Thome would just know when to hang 'em up. Another old, slow bat in the lineup.

Thome looks like he could keep hitting homeruns until he's about 60.

Look how civilized the Twins fans are searching for Thome's HR ball in the flower bed. If that was Philly or NY, those flowers would get destroyed.

After interleague, can we continue to bat Thome and just give him a lawn chair somewhere out in left field near the ball girl?

How long before Thome is shipped to an AL team where he can DH full time?

Vic should have beat that out. Was he hustling?

HOW DARE THEY HIT CHOOCH??

wheels just gave vic the old "there was a time..."

The wheels kiss of death.

I call 37 pitches before Blanton relinquishes the lead.

That pitch that hit Ruiz looked awfully intentional.

ARod for Thome.

3 more games until the Phils lose their best hitter.

"I call 37 pitches before Blanton relinquishes the lead."

Is this like "Name that Tune?" I call 32.

First Vic can't hit lefty because of his hand/wrist injury. Now, he's lost a step. Pretty soon he'll have full dentures and a hip replacement. Time to hang it up, Vic. Can Thome play center?

Is there ANYONE here who thinks Blanton will hold this lead? Anyone?

Wiggygg.

Come on, Blanton doesn't run deep counts and gives up long balls, he can lose a lead way faster than that.

What were the odds coming into Interleague play that Thome would carry the offense? 10:1? 15:1?

Now has 3 HRs and 13 RBIs since last Friday in Baltimore and hitting close to .500 (12-23)

My wife thinks I'm clinically insane for staring at a clapped-out Dell/ MS Vista laptop and bursting out in laughter. Between GTown and b_a_p, it's hopeless. I may never conjure an original post again.

No other blog -- hell, no other site on the web provides the juxtaposition of ad hoc "Henry Hill" comments and a review of Physics 101 (0 degrees Kelvin?? wow) all in the context of vicious, biting satire of a Major League Baseball team. Brilliant stuff.

"Is there ANYONE here who thinks Blanton will hold this lead? Anyone?"

Since it has now been 5 full minutes since you asked that question, and no one has yet chimed in to answer, I think we can deem the answer to be: No.

"Now has 3 HRs and 13 RBIs since last Friday in Baltimore and hitting close to .500 (12-23)"

Put that man at first base!

Seems like every at bat, Mayberry is down 0-2. Then he strikes out looking or puts an awful swing on a bad pitch.

Watching Mayberry use only one-third of the field is painful.

In Mini Mart's defense, he has shown in limited time he isn't bad defensively at 2B.

He just a terrible hitter who is a poor fundamental player who makes ton of mental mistakes and isn't above average defensively at any other position.

Great approach by Mini Mart

That's your defense of Mini-Mart??

Don't ever speak in my defense for anything. :)

"In Mini Mart's defense, he has shown in limited time he isn't bad defensively at 2B. He just a terrible hitter who is a poor fundamental player who makes ton of mental mistakes and isn't above average defensively at any other position."

That was a hell of a defense case. I hope you're not a lawyer.

Just use the shift on defense. Leave Thome at cleanup and let him sit when they take the field. Are you allowed to only play 8 on D?

Fatalotti and I are on the same wavelength.

I think Blanton will hold this lead if he is only asked to 6. You know that Cholly will push him for at least 7 though and >100 pitches is like walking through a refinery with a light cigar coated in gasoline.

i'd love to see thome managing the phillies some day.

Blanton is to the seventh inning as a vampire is to sunlight.

Best Mini-Mart report I heard was the old guy who has been a season ticket since '84.

"He's just a dumb ball player"

Pretty apt.

No reason they can't hide Thome in LF.

Guy who sits in front of me and his scouting report on Mini-Mart last year during a Sunday game.

Diamond hasn't pitched poorly so far. Just fell behind Thome 2-0 and gave him a fastball that he didn't miss.

It's amazing Blanton could maintain enough composure to get a guy w/ "ham" in his name out twice.

JRoll is also trending up. His OBP is nothing to right home about this month coming into tonight (.316) but he has been like the JRoll of old with now 8 XBHs in 13 games in June.

He had just 10 in all of April/May.

While I don't want Blanton to put runners on, he really needs to plunk somebody for Chooch getting hit.

Although this is not observable by most BL posters, Blanton is actually showing much better command tonight.

MG's closing argument in a murder trial.

"In my client's defense, he did not mutilate his mother's body after he killed her. He just beat her senseless with a baseball bat, then stole all of her jewelry, then shot her in the head at point blank range after she came to and discovered what he was doing, then grabbed a beer out of her refrigerator and kicked her dead body 10 or 15 times, before taking her keys and driving off in her new Mercedes."

Although this is observable by most BL posters, clout thinks he's better than you. By a lot.

I enjoyed MG's post where he starts with "in defense of Mini Mart" and then proceeds to eviscerate every part of his 'game.'

Not saying I don't agree with it. I just was waiting for the "defense."

Someone push "Murph" over the flower pots, please.

'Dr Joe' and 'Mr. Blanton'

clout is right. Blanton is getting ahead of hitters tonight on the first pitch and has had much better fastball location. When he does that this year, he has been very good. See if he can keep it up for 3 more innings.

I believe Vic is the first player in MLB history to attempt to gain a lucrative FA deal on the basis of pity alone.

That missing Thome HR ball will never be found. It now lies in a cornfield somewhere out in Iowa.

Fata: Not at all. Making a series of moronic posts doesn't make you any better or worse person than another other person. It just makes you someone who makes moronic posts.

MG, so if a pitcher doesn't leave every 3rd pitch over the middle of the plate, he's less likely to get hammered?

What a novel concept.

Seems like Chase Utley and the Phillies medical staff might benefit from reading this article.
