Lots to talk about Cliff Lee and the Phillies winning in impressive fashion last night and another game on the horizon at 12:35 today.
Standings check: Don’t look now, but the Phillies are 40 games over .500. Forty games over .500. They are on pace for 106 wins. They can go 14-16 in September and still reach 100 wins. The Phillies have 40 road victories – more wins than 23 other teams have at home. If the Phillies hadn’t even played a home game this entire season, they’d still only have seven fewer wins than the Astros. And it’s a good thing the Phillies are playing as well as they are, since the Braves and Brewers are both on pace for 96 wins. Meanwhile, it’s starting to look more and more likely that the Phillies will be playing the Diamondbacks in the NLDS. With all due respect to Charlie Manuel, the job that Kirk Gibson is doing with that team is really pretty incredible. Sure, the Giants have been ravaged by injuries, but the fact that the D-Backs are 78-59 is still very surprising.
Hot and hotter: Hunter Pence wrapped up the month of August with a seven-game hitting streak, during which he batted .393 with three home runs. Since coming over from Houston, Pence is hitting .330/.403/.573 with seven home runs in 27 games. Then there’s Cliff Lee. The numbers speak for themselves, but here’s one stat that’s going around this morning: Lee is one of three pitchers in major league history to post at least two months in the same season with at least five wins and an ERA under 1.00. Here is that complete list:
Walter Johnson, 1913 – 5-0, 0.24 ERA in April … 6-0, 0.81 ERA in July
Bob Gibson, 1968 – 6-0 with a 0.50 ERA in both June and July
Cliff Lee, 2011 – 5-0, 0.21 ERA in June … 5-0, 0.45 ERA in August
Preview: Vance Worley (9-1, 2.65) straps on the goggles this afternoon for a 12:35 start in Cincinnati. The Phillies have won 12 straight games started by Worley and they are 16-2 in games he has pitched this season. One of those two losses, however, came against the Reds on May 24. Worley gave up three runs in five innings (as well as a season high-tying four walks) in that 6-3 defeat. The Phils’ opponent today will be Mike Leake (11-8, 4.04), who leads Cincinnati in wins. He had a 6.91 ERA in two appearances against the Phillies last season. Including the 2010 NLDS, the Phillies are 13-1 in their last 14 games against the Reds. They have held Cincinnati to two runs and a .172 batting average through the first three games of this series.
Today’s Lineup: Victorino CF, Martinez 3B, Utley 2B, Howard 1B, Pence RF, Ibanez LF, Schneider C, Valdez SS, Worley P.
