Preview: Roy Halladay is trying to win his fifth straight start tonight, more than a week since his last outing, as the Phils open a three-game set with the Diamondbacks. Halladay (15-4, 2.51) has had seven full days off since his last outing - a 5-3 win over the Dodgers - due to a pair of off-days and a rainout. Halladay has won all three of his career starts vs. Arizona, notching a 2.61 ERA with an 18:3 K/BB ratio in those outings. In his last 10 home starts - all wins for the Phils - Halladay is 7-0 with a 2.01 ERA. However, he'll have to contain D-Backs slugger Justin Upton, who has 13 hits, including three homers, in his last six games. Arizona, which enters on a six-game winning streak, will give the nod to Josh Collmenter (7-7, 3.51). The rookie right-hander is 0-3 with a 7.08 ERA in his last four road starts. If the playoffs started today, the Phils and D-Backs would meet in the NLDS.
Lineup: The Phillies will go with Rollins 6, Victorino 8, Utley 4, Howard 3, Pence 9, Ibanez 7, Ruiz 2, Martinez 5, Halladay 1.

Beltran to the DL. Are the Giants the new Mets?

A soft-tossing RHP pitcher who has a good changeup that the Phils haven't seen before? Phils' offensive kryptonite!

I've never really tracked it, but I swear everytime Kendrick gets demoted or sent back to the bullpen, somebody gets injured. They might want to check his locker for voodoo dolls...

From TTI's post on the previous thread regarding boilerplate language in MLB contracts, it seems like Heather might be right on LoMo. If the team has an issue with a player's citizenship or whatever, it can terminate his contract (or in Zambrano's case, suspend him without pay. The contract doesn't say anything regarding demotion to AAA (and the salary implications of that are pretty huge).
What people seem to be missing here is that MLB is a monopoly. LoMo has no option to join another team, because he hasn't been fired, just given a massive demotion that he can't reject and find a new employer in his field.

Mayberry:
I understand why Cholly wants to play Ibanez at home vs RHP tonight. What I don't understand is why he continues to start Ibanez vs LHP despite his .209/.235/.382 line in 110 ABs. Case of Cholly just being a mule & going with a veteran despite having a clearly superior option.
Posted by: MG | Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at 06:28 PM
MLB isn't a monopoly. Riversharks would sign LoMo in a heartbeat.

I'd expect a pitcher to recalled, with Polly's DL stint.
I'll say its time to see one of the 3 kids in the LV bullpen. Schwimer should be first up.
Aumont will be next by September 1st.
Herndon becomes the long-man for the next week.

George Herman Ruth was the first man to hit a ball over the roof of old Comiskey Park on this date in 1927.

Also thinking ahead to next week...
Phils have the Mets for 3 games starting Monday. With the way Cole has struggled against the New Yorkers this year, it would make sense to push him back to the Florida series.
Here is how the rotation for next week could look...
METS-
Monday- Lee
Tuesday- Worley
Wednesday- Oswalt
MARLINS-
Friday- Hamels
Saturday- Halladay
Sunday- Lee

denny - How are Schwimer's platoon splits these days?
In re: the line-up
Good to see Chollie getting creative with the LaRussa switch - putting the better hitter ninth and sliding the worse one to 8th.
The last round of draft picks, IMO, made this a pretty good draft. Not so much that tall kid they drafted 49th, mind you. But Having both Walding and T. Greene in the system doubles the meagre chances that we'll have a shortstop prospect in, like, four years. From, like, a bajillion to one all the way to a gazillion to one. Much better odds.

sifl: So you didn't go read the contract then? Thanks for playing genius.
People are getting hung up on the verbiage. The team has the right to expel him from the team if he breaks those "rules." That falls under discipline. they also have the right to not cut ties with him and can demote someone who did what he did. It doesn't help his case that they can cherrypick certain stats and say, "We demoted him for performance."
I mean people are actually forming an argument that guys in MLB have free reign to speak negatively about their team. And this is the third time in 2 months he has done so.
Posted by: The Truth Injection | Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at 07:30 PM
Hard to see how this DBacks lineup is getting the Jon done with so many veteran stiffs in the lineup including Bloomquist, Burroughs, and Overbay.
Posted by: MG | Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at 07:34 PM
Let's hope the second time thru the lineup is better. Collmenter has only throw 4 pitches off the plate so far.

Mike - yeah. Straight as an arrow fastball that is topping at 88 and his changeup. Hasn't impressed me so far but I bet this is one of those games where the lineup doesn't wake up until the 7th.

Pence ricochets it off the rocks by East River/Kelly Drive, loses control, and barrels it into the Schuylkill.

How does Pence battle that at bat and then flail at that pitch waaay outside?

Not a bad AB by pence but how many balls did he chase that AB? 3? 4?
Posted by: MG | Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at 07:58 PM
Yea, i don't quite get why pence watches the first 3-2 pitch he probably should have swung at and then swings at the 2nd pitch he should have watched. I mean isn't it sort of 101 that you cut the plate in half when your in a count like that?

Pence doesn't impress with his plate disc. Kind of guy who will enter his 30s, lose a bit of bat speed, and really struggle to compensate for his poor swing mechanics and plate disc.
