Jimmy Rollins, a nation turns its lonely eyes to you.

Jimmy batting 3rd in ink anywhere? I think he will leadoff still.

I love Jimmy in the 3 spot, but what happens when Utz comes back. No way he bats in the bottom half of the lineup. I'm assuming the planned lineup is
Vic
Polly
Jimmy
Howard
Ibanez
???
With Ibanez, Mayberry, and Francisco being shuffled for handedness, but who is the oddman out when Utz comes back. Do we plan on putting Jimmy back at 1 and dropping Vic down?

.

Then what would you project your opening day lineup to be, assuming Polly is at 3B

JRo
Vic
Polly
Howard
Ibanez, Mayberry, Fransico (depending on handedness)
???

I wonder if Taylor is ever going to be able to break into the Oakland starting 9 out there.

i don't think rollins is going to hit 3rd. i think he'll leadoff

Good news on Polly. So all the panic was overwrought...as expected.

Utley is the only real concern heading into the season

i think the panic was overblown yes but polanco is not 100%. he's still bothered by his elbow but i guess is going to play through it

I would guess you're right, st.

I keep trying to battle a bloated bank account, but it's not cooperating.

5 beerleaguer bucks says Polly ends up sitting out atleast 3 games at the beginning of the real season.

TTI:

As long you keep calling me a liar, I have a problem with you. Those of you up North are gonna hear things before me because I'm down here. I don't sit in front of my computer 24/7 searching for stuff. But when I post a piece of an e-mail etc., that's the truth as I know it.

If you disagree with me, I have no problem with that of course. I've made these points to you before.

Let me tell you this: From what I'm told, The Phils and Rangers are still talking about Young. The Rangers want Singleton, (the Phils won't part with him), along with a starter, Blanton or KK. This was as 2 days ago. That's it. We all know this.

Connect the dots here. Texas needs a starter, Phils need an infielder and a RH bat. Feliz is going to the 'pen and Young is uphappy in the DH roll. No DH anywhere makes 16 million a year. It is a bad contract, and Young is 34. I'm not saying it'll happen but they're still talking.

Now you, and others may have heard that reported somewhere else and my friend may have heard it from the same place. Maybe I'm gettin' lied to. Who knows? But he called me and told me that, so I'm passing it along. FWIW, in my opinion, it means nothing. If he comes in, fine. I'm not an "I told you so kind of guy". There's nothing "silly" about it.

I'm sure my buddy reads this blog, if I disclosed his name the friendship would be over, you see? I'd love to say who he is. Then you could judge him for yourself instead of judging me.

Now I've told you that I'm not hard to find if you know where to look. I'll talk Phils baseball anytime. Maybe I've got the concept of a blog wrong. I'm not an expert. But I'm thinking anything Phils is good fodder here. It's not about write or wrong.

Patrone: You're conflating two issues here. No one debates that the Phillies have a need and Young would fill that need. No one debates that the Rangers maybe could use a starter. (I would point out though that they moved Feliz back to bullpen because they both needed a closer and that they had a few options pan out in the starting role.)

The issue is with how you present the argument. If you just talked about the Young thing that would be fine. But you do it by having a "friend" on the inside.

I'm just saying- talk about things like the rest of us do instead of trying to put yourself on a pedestal above everyone else by having an in.

I'm so looking forward to the regular season beginning. Then the endless pre-season bickering can be replaced by the endless regular season bickering. But at least there will be games that mean something.

barfield sent down. expected that. was at the game yesterday. not impressive. neither was delwyn young either

Michael Taylor had a shoulder problem that bothered him all season and likely was the cause of his big power dropoff.

If the shoulder is better, he should post some decent numbers in the PCL this season at age 25. If he doesn't, then there should be some serious concern.

The A's 4th outfielder is Ryan Sweeney, so it's not like he wouldn't be able to crack the team once he's ready.

Outman is recovering from TJ surgery and needs some time in Trip A to do so.

Oddly, our correspondent failed to mention ex-Phillie Gio Gonzalez, who had a great season last year and a great spring this year.

st: Barfield going down is no shock. Nothing special in the field and his bat faded as major league pitchers rounded into form.

Does Delwyn have options left? If so, he probably goes as well because he's such a bad fielder at 2B.

That leaves Mini-Mart and Orr for the final spot. I still think Rube brings someone in, either before the season or soon after. The idea of having both Valdez and Mini-Mart in the lineup is disgusting.

Delwyn Young sucks. He's a terrible fielder and his bat doesn't play against MLB pitching. He's completely lost in even LF as he showed yesterday.

Barfield is nothing special either.

MT has been a disappointment. Outman is a legit pitcher and he'll likely (if he healed right) be back up sooner rather than later.

Gio Gonzalez is a pretty good pitcher.

young can't play LF either. i don't think martinez and valdez will be in the lineup together. castillo is going to make the team though

Its gonna be Mini Mart and Castillo as the final two spots...I feel like a Pirates fan.

Dpatrone, you are not my friend anymore

Dpatrone, you are not my friend anymore

clout: Gio isn't on the fringe. he's for real. that's why.

Brewers acquired OF Nyjer Morgan from the Nationals in exchange for INF/OF prospect Cutter Dykstra and oft-traded Kash Konsiderations.

JW: Kyle Drabek is on the fringe? I guess I misundertood the criteria.

DPatrone, I for one enjoy the speculation. I don't think it comes across as superior or whatever. I just find it fun and interesting.

Nats deal Morgan to the Brewers for Dykstra's son and cash.

Given that the Brewers essentially got him for nothing and Morgan is making just a little over league minimum, I wonder why the Phils didn't take a flyer on a real need (an OF who can play CF). Certainly better than Francisco or Martinez play CF.

Maybe he meant fringe for making an MLB roster this year?

Though, I'd say that Carrasco was pretty much a lock too given his great run last fall and good stuff.

Better keep Lenny away from the cash.

"I wonder why the Phils didn't take a flyer on a real need (an OF who can play CF). "

Just spitballing: because the Phillies don't want any guys who are gonna cause problems? Morgan seems like a total loose cannon.

MG: Excellent question.

Cutter Dykstra just seems like an "Intervention" name.

funny, but i never pictured dpatrone on a plinth.

Wouldn't Barfield help with the speed concern? Instead of grandpa Castillo?

I would think the difference between Drabek and Gonzalez is pretty obvious.

Heather hit on why the Phillies didn't go after Morgan. He is a bit of a headcase and they don't want that in their locker room.

2 week prediction Castillo .185,3 errors and didn't touch 9 balls Exxon would have fielded.

CF isn't exactly an area of need at the moment. After Vic, we still have two guys capable of playing CF who will be on the roster anyway. Unless they think Mayberry needs to go back to AAA, they don't have a need for another CF. What they need is an INF who can start and provide an OPS over .650.

From Buster Olney: "By the way: Rival scouts trailing Phils convinced that Placido Polanco's injury will be a major factor for him and affect his availability."

The Yankees pitching rotation is a mess. Freddy Garcia? Geeze.

Lee
Halladay
Oswalt
Hamels
Blanton

Sabathia
Burnett
Hughes
Nova
Garcia

Sorry, I just wanted to see it in writing.

TTI - Rather have a headcase with clear talent and ability like Morgan like a no-talent like Martinez.

"TTI - Rather have a headcase with clear talent and ability like Morgan like a no-talent like Martinez."

Yeah, but that doesn't seem to be the way Charlie Manuel and the FO think.

MG, precisely.

There's also an argument to be made for how secure our clubhouse is. This clubhouse could probably handle Morgan. Don't you think?

Jack, on the last thread I was advised of certain things about you and I no longer view you as a serious poster. Thus, I will hereafter provide only a conned response to you, quoting my advisors:

"I don't know why people even bother arguing anything with Jack. When he's wrong (which is often) he doesn't admit to being wrong. He just tries to twist what you said into some unrecognizable mass that makes him look right. It's not worth your time.

Posted by: The Truth Injection

TTI is right about Jack- he admitted early this week he is just baiting people. He doesn't actually believe most of the stuff he's saying. awh- I would suggest just not even bothering anymore.

Posted by: Iceman"

"canned" response, though in you case, Jack, "conned" is more appropriate.

JW, in more ex-Phillies news, Carlos solva and his $11.5MM were just released by the Cubs.

I'm trying to figure out which would be the bigger bite, bloated Silva or his bloated contract.

MG: That's if Martinez makes the team. Morgan is a headcase whose insanity gets in the way of his talent. That is not the type of player that you want.

Also, Ben Fran and Mayberry could step into center if necessary. They also had Wilson Valdez put in a bunch of time out there this spring. *****No, I'm not saying I want to see Valdez log a lot of time out there in the season*****

So center field isn't necessarily a huge need. It's certainly not worth bringing in a psycho like Morgan.

The glaring need is in the IF, where they need people besides Rollins and Howard who can hit, ass-u-ming Polly is nursing his elbow.

Cubs release Carlos Silva, Buster Olney picks Braves to win NL East. Some things never change.

"I would think the difference between Drabek and Gonzalez is pretty obvious."

And the difference is as such that it would lead one to call Drabek a "fringe" player on the Blue Jays roster? Not obvious to me why/what the connection is.

"There's also an argument to be made for how secure our clubhouse is. This clubhouse could probably handle Morgan. Don't you think?"

Yeah, but what's the return? If Morgan had the upside of Ty Cobb, it might make sense. If Morgan's upside is about 2-2.5 WAR, and the chance of him getting there far from certain...then why bother?

I think Rube needs to add another big dollar starting pitcher. Can't have enough aces.

"And the difference is as such that it would lead one to call Drabek a "fringe" player on the Blue Jays roster? Not obvious to me why/what the connection is."

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Gonzalez is assured of a starting job, whereas I thought Drabek might be sent to AAA. Is that incorrect?

To those still clamoring for Michael Young...Have you ever bothered looking at his road numbers? Outside of the Launchpad in Arlington, he's a very below average hitter (84 OPS+, worse than Luis Castillo, for instance) and still a crappy defender.

What about that makes him worth committing assets to in trade, dollars, and playing time?

Polanco's injury is why they're looking at Castillo. Valdez can't fill in two infield spots at the same time.

Heather, the reason to bother with a guy like Morgan is if he can help the team.

If he becomes a locker room problem then you simply release him. The risk: The MLB minimum salary.

I would have liked to have brought him in for depth and speed, but Rizzo has already said he doen't like trading within the division, so it's a long shot they could have gotten him.

And Rizzo is right: Why help a division rival you're trying to catch?

"To those still clamoring for Michael Young...Have you ever bothered looking at his road numbers?"

Chris, his road numbers have been discussed here extensively.

TTI - Guess I like what Morgan brings off the bench and as a possible starter in CF for the almost inevitable leg malady & trip to the 15-day DL that Vic suffers this season. Plus he's cheap. He was making $1.5-2M or clamoring that he needed to be a starter then it's a different story

He's a headcase but one who plays hard. If anything, he too intense & hardwired on the field. Always easier to deal with that than an Adam Eaton-type headcase who is just largely indifferent to what happens on the field.

Joe - I thought Olney picked the Phils to win the East last year and the Mets the year before that. He has picked the Braves in a while.

Considering there were reports that Rizzo asked Rube for Dom in exchange for Morse in the offseason, I doubt the Phils and Nats will be completing many swaps over the next several seasons. Doubt Rube even bothered calling on Morgan.

awh - I wouldn't be surprised if the Phils did inquire about Morgan and Rizzo just refused to deal him to a division rival before the season started. Much different than say the July trading deadline.

awh - And yet we still have people saying "those 21 HRs and 91 RBIs would look great in the lineup now, wouldn't they?" What makes people think he would actually put up numbers like that with the Phils?

It would be an absolutely awful use of limited resources.

Chris, except for a couple of posters here, the general consensus on Michael Young seems to be - as one of my favorite comedians John Pinnette would say - "Oh, nay nay".

IMHO, unless Texas decided to dump Young and eat almost a large majority of his salary [IMO 36 of the 48 million he's owed] I wouldn't even think about trading for him, much less seriously consider it.

He's declining and grossly overpaid for what he could produce outside of Texas.

New thread!

Clout: Meaning "on the bubble." Probably should have used that in the header.

He's a headcase but one who plays hard. If anything, he too intense & hardwired on the field. Nike Lebron James shoes
, Nike Air Max 90 , Always easier to deal with that than an Adam Eaton-type headcase who is just largely indifferent to what happens on the field.
