Trying to follow in Jamie Moyer's footsteps, Kyle Kendrick (3-2, 4.80) looks to recover from his lashing in Boston tonight when the Phillies settle up with Andy Pettitte (8-1, 2.46) and the Yankees. First pitch is 7:05. A win would make it three out of four against two tough interleague rivals. Beerleaguer's eyes will be on reliever Scott Mathieson, although it's unclear what role he'll fill in the Phillies bullpen.

Wow, you're hoping for an insurance run in the ninth and the Phils tack on 4 (and counting, maybe). What fun.

Looked like a clean hit to me...
Posted by: NEPP | Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:15 PM
Ibanez sucking nicely there for an XBH. The Phillies tonight have done it all. A 2 run hit the runner single. Pile 'em on Phils!

Don't be frustrated watching the board this early. It doesn't matter being a few up or down at this point. You gotta worry about winning your game. Standing are just window dressing at this point.

Seriously though...clipped it with his heel. Damn shame that.

This has to be the end of slumpsville -- the entire umpire crew was fast asleep!!
Posted by: Bruce Ruffin | Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:16 PM
It definitely hit him - they just didn't see it, and had to make a call anyway.
Posted by: Sophist | Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:16 PM
Jeter runs off that field like a hall of famer. Greatest run off the field I've ever seen.
Posted by: Malcolm | Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:17 PM
it hit him and all but who made the call? jeter?
Posted by: gobaystars! | Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:18 PM
Jeter with the savvy veteran move.
Umps: Sh!t, I missed it...did you see it? Derek's running off the field...guess we better call it an out. Crap.
Posted by: NEPP | Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:18 PM
Did UC just efficiently leave his reliever in against the RHB to not waste another pitcher?
Slump OVER!

Who's that guy in the jockey outfit on the third base side? Is this a new NYC style I was unaware of?
Posted by: joe l | Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:21 PM
Is Cano officially better than Utley yet?
I mean, its gotta be close.
Posted by: NEPP | Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:22 PM
J.C. Romero, control artist!
Posted by: Bruce Ruffin | Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:22 PM
the only thing worse than jeter is his stupid fade haircut.
Posted by: gobaystars! | Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:22 PM
Here's a thought: Why not have JC throw batting practice to Howard all day, every day till Ryan figures out how to hit a slider away?
Posted by: NEPP | Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:23 PM
More encouragement: Cholly puts on the h&r with Howrd at the plate. Ailin' Utley steals 2nd, making Marte ppitch a bit more cautiously to Werth The BB results in CHoP giving up the rs 2b to Raul with 2 out. And not a 2-run HR in sight.

Best win of the year...hands down. And its not even close. That was the most impressive game they've played all season.
KK came up huge (just as I predicted yesterday morning). The offense is coming awake and the defense was vintage Phillies baseball again.
Good work and good game...great feeling to win a series against the Yankees.
Posted by: NEPP | Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:24 PM
Kyle Kendrick just dominated the Yankees for 7 innings...wrap your mind around that thought.
Kyle Freaking Kendrick.
Posted by: NEPP | Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:25 PM
That was a great game of baseball. An awesome win. Well done KK. Well done Phils.
After the 2 drubbings in Boston this series win in NY making it 3 from the last 4 is excellent. Gotta be happy BL's. Lets go home for a Twin killing.

Mick's back in business!
Posted by: curt | Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:27 PM
Somewhere there's a Yankee blog after Gm 1 saying they might lose 8 games a year if they played in the NL.
Then they go out and lose to Geezer and KK, their 2nd IL series loss of the year.

Another good night for Milt.
Posted by: EastFallowfield | Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:30 PM
Wow! What a win! I was all but sure we'd get swept after Halladay lost the first game; I do remember the voice of hope impelling me to hold out that maybe, just maybe, Moyer and KK could pitch well - but that hope was a weak voice.
I tip my hat to Moyer and to Kendrick! And to the finally awake offense!

"Here's a thought: Why not have JC throw batting practice to Howard all day, every day till Ryan figures out how to hit a slider away?"
What an excellent idea NEPP
Posted by: BloodStripes | Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:30 PM
How many people predicted a Yankees sweep if they beat Halladay?
Posted by: Old Phan | Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:31 PM
Suddenly, J.A. Happ might not have a spot in the rotation. Would they roll (pardon the expression) Joe Blanton to the bullpen for another LH starter?
Posted by: Bruce Ruffin | Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:31 PM
So, if we do play the Yanks in the WS, this'd be our rotation, right?
Game 1: Jamie Moyer
Game 2: Kyle Kendrick
Game 3: Roy Halladay
Game 4: Jamie Moyer
Game 5: Kyle Kendrick
Game 6: Roy Halladay
Game 7: Jamie Moyer
Right? Granted we're spotting them the 2 Halladay starts but otherwise, with Young Jamie and KK out there, all we need to do is score 2-3 runs and we're golden.
Posted by: NEPP | Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:32 PM
They need to get this Halladay guy out of the rotation---he's KILLING us :)
Posted by: Marc H | Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:32 PM
If Yankees played in NL
Posted by: EastFallowfield | Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:34 PM
A tip of the cap to Kendrick. He had some really great movement on his pitches tonight. His reaction to Polanco's catch was also pretty priceless.
Posted by: Scott | Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:34 PM
I'm guessing the boys must have figured out a way to steal the Yank's signs without binoculars. Maybe a shaman sacrificing chickens in the club house.
Posted by: philwynk | Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:35 PM
Bruce - Blanton looks like the one to get bumped.
Posted by: BloodStripes | Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:35 PM
The Phils got back to playing National League baseball the past 2 nights.
We need to see much more of the aggressive Phils and much less of the sit back and hope for a big fly Phils. The Phils are so much better, when they are running and making things happen that way.
Valdez is your utiity infielder. Castro should just head to the airport now and hit the road.
If the Phils can go on and win another division title, remember the dates June 15th and June 16th. Those 2 starts by Moyer and Kendrick (your 5th and 6th starters coming into 2010) may have saved the Phils bacon.
I'd say Country Joe better do something tomorrow night (besides throw batting practice). He is slipping farther and farther behind everyone else in the rotation.
Posted by: denny b. | Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:35 PM
Hopefully the FO and UC have figured the Valdez/Castro debate out. From the playing time, it sure seems like it. Valdez is just good enough out there to not be brutal to watch.
Posted by: NEPP | Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:36 PM
The past two games has been like listening to the Phillies again. What a pleasant surprise! What a relief!
And how novel to be winning a ballgame with outstanding starting pitching, hit-and-run plays, stolen bases, sac flies, and stellar plays in the field.
Can you imagine if the team gets good at doing these things... and then the power comes back? Wouldn't that be awesome?
Posted by: philwynk | Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:37 PM
Hopefully, Rollin's back full time next week. Maybe send Heavy B. down (hell, no less than Brett Myers took his medicine to come back strong) to sort things out.
I just can't bear a momentum buster like the current KY Joe every 5th day. I want to have our boot heel on the neck of the Braves by August 1. Screw the Mets/Fish/Nats.
Posted by: Bruce Ruffin | Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:44 PM
That would, indeed, be awesome, philwynk.
About the power. Every time Howard comes to the plate, a voice in me says, "Time to start earning your $125 million." I wonder if the relaxed Ryan ever has that same voice in his head. It's not working, still no power. Someday....
Posted by: GBrettfan | Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:45 PM
Damn, if I only knew what date it was.
Make that June 16th and June 17th for the 2 dates to remember.
Those 2 starts by Grandpa and Little Roy, against the Yanks, after Halladay had been rocked in Game 1 and you seemed to be heading towards .500 or below with no momentum, could be 2 days that we remember come September.
Posted by: denny b. | Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:46 PM
NEPP, Moyer throws so soft I'm sure he can make 4 starts.
Posted by: bake | Thursday, June 17, 2010 at 10:50 PM
"Kyle Freaking Kendrick."
Apparently NEPP doesn't follow David Murphy's Twitter, because then he would know it is
Kyle RODNEY Kendrick

From the post game show on the radio..........KK is 23 - 3 when going 6+ innings.
