“Hard to Believe!” is the game-by-game story of the 2008 Philadelphia Phillies, from the first pitch on Opening Day to the final pitch of the World Series. Each game is captured in analytical detail by Philadelphia Magazine’s 2008 “Best Sportswriter” Jason Weitzel, along with photos, behind-the-scenes access and exclusive interviews by Michael McNesby, making this 370-page compendium a must-own for all fans.
I waited in que forEVER at 3:00 on the DOT and came up with...nothing. Went on ebay and they are going for about $50+ per ticket already. I guess I will be on the street too and your boss shouldnt mind - it should be a paid holiday!
I have to say, it's sorta unsettling to see the number of gracious Mets fans congratulating the Phils after the trolls have wreaked their havoc all year...
" ... Feliz and his ilk hold a special place in the heart of Manuel, himself a part-time major leaguer who never fulfilled his potential.
"He's a different kind of guy. All of a sudden, he'll get a big hit for you," Manuel said.
Indeed, Feliz' third-inning single in Game 4 gave the Phillies a 2-0 lead in that eventual blowout win. Maybe the Phillies will see more of that next season.
"Tell you what: I think he can hit .280, .300," Manuel said. "He's got to be more aggressive . . . Tell you what. He drives me a little crazy at times."
Last night, Feliz drove Manuel and the region absolutely delirious. *"
After your parade, all the players will go home to the cities they really love and you will be forced to deal with the emptiness of your lives that this "success" bandaided over.
"...We play in a tough-ass town to play in," Pat Burrell, the longest-tenured Phillie, said. "I'm proud of that. I don't think anybody in here knows this city and the way they think the way that I do. To be able to hand this over to them, this is as good as it gets..."
After Beerleaguer, all the posters will go home to the lives they really love and you, Timmy, will be forced to deal with the emptiness of your life that this "trolling" bandaided over.
Best quote I've read yet- "Last Night... Joe Carter flied out... Joe Jurevicius was tackled... Robert Horry clanked a last second shot... Scott Stevens was checked by Eric Lindros... Donavon McNabb didn’t throw up. Last Night the Phillies made up for 25 years of broken hearts."
Last June I got out the bat the Phillies sent me back in early 1981. It's red with all the Phillies signatures from the 1980 team on it. It was given to all full-season season ticket holders. Have hardly touched it in years. I've had it next to me (where I watch the games) since then. Lately, I've been swinging it before every game (both LH and RH since I'm a switch hitter). It's kept me going all season and especially in the playoffs. I'm a diehard fan and I can't describe how I feel right now. A wonderful feeling of euphoria as opposed to the dark cloud of failure that's been sitting over my head.
This season validates all the seasons of futilty for me. The 2008 Phillies are.....
WORLD CHAMPIONS!!!!! Go for it again next year boys! I love ya all!! Thanks to Beerleaguer that I've been reading for about a year now. The most knowledgable fans in the world post year and I enjoy reading the comments although I rarely post here.
Horrifically off-topic, but check out that Yardbarker link about Jeff Kent.
"Jeff Kent, who played second base for the Los Angeles Dodgers this season, has stepped into the emotional world of same-sex marriage, giving $15,000 to backers of the California proposition on Tuesday’s ballot that would ban it."
Since I'll be driving down from Boston, I would imagine the most interesting trade would be something from new england, but since I'm not drinking it, I won't be picky.
I've read most of the posts during and after last night's game, and I think now is enough time after everything has almost sunk in to bring up a point about Joe Maddon's horribly-managed game last night.
How about everyone slobbering over Maddon as a manager prior to the World Series? Not only did he get outmanaged by Cholly, but he made incomprehensible, indefensible gaffes last night.
Leaving Balfour in the game was an issue for some people, but I think that's just hindsight - if Jenkins pops out, then Balfour probably mows down Jimmy and Werth and everyone's happy in Tampa.
The questionable (and that is an understatement of a word) move was leaving in Howell to pitch to Burrell. You have Chad Bradford, Edwin Jackson, Dan Wheeler (not to mention Trever Miller and David Price too), AND, if need be, they have starters who are rested to come into the game.
Oh and on a side note, anyone shaking and still incredulous after last night's events? Can't wait for the parade tomorrow!!
diggity, didn't you hear about how Maddon *wanted* the Howell-Burrell matchup? So much so that he was willing to give up one of his final twelve outs to get it. He thought it would be beneficial because Howell throws a lot of low curveballs that he thought Burrell would chase. Maybe he should have checked in with Ned Yost about the wisdom of letting a left-handed specialist face Burrell in a late/close situation. Talk about a hunch that had no real basis in reality.
Like to thank the mets fans posting congradulations to us on here today. This has got to suck for them (not that I'm sympathetic). Perhaps someday the Mets will finally stop choking and win it all. Sometime far in the future I hope.
Mets got Santana (for milions upon millions of dollars)
RSB: At least when Manuel left Romero in (which could also be considered questionable), it was because there were three lefties coming up and we were more comfortable with him than Eyre, especially considering we had already taken the lead and were 6 outs from a WS championship.
I'm still not sure I get Maddon's insistence that Howell was a good matchup for Burrell because of his slider. Very strange.
I just watched the ninth inning again and I'm still in shock. I can't believe it. We won.
I wasn't able to go to Game 5, but I was lucky enough to get a ticket to the celebration tomorrow. What a great ending to a great year.
I grew up a Dan Marino fan and I remember him saying that just once he wanted to know what it felt like to end the season with a win. I realized that that was part of what I was feeling today, no what ifs, or coulda beens. Just a wonderful feeling of accomplishment and closure.
Maybe Blanton can take some of that WS money and get someone to give him a decent shave. Yeesh. I also think that J-Roll should start cultivating the Baron Davis facial hair for next season. Now that's what I'm talkin' bout!
RSB: Horrifically off topic indeed. Not the forum for that. And Jeff Kent may be an a-hole, but to cite that as a reason he's a scumbag is ridiculous, juvenile, and disrespectful of those who might disagree with you. But like I said, this isn't the place for that discussion.
This entire post-season has been a dream for the Phils! 11-3 and 7-0 at home!
They played confidently and got it done when they needed to! Everybody stepped up.
I don't know what came over me but throughout the world series, all of my in-game predictions came through, including calling the Phils in 5 before the series. Here are the plays in-game that I called out loud to friends who were in the room, i s**t you not:
Game 4, Howards' first HR: I called opposite-field homer when he stepped to the plate.
Game 4, Madson striking out Longoria in the 8th: I called the K right before the AB.
Game 4, Blanton HR: I called Blanton's homer just before the 2-1 pitch was delivered!
Game 5, Feliz's game-winning RBI hit in the 7th: I called base hit up the middle when I saw the infield was in.
These were the only "calls" I made and they all happened. I cannot explain it, I just knew it would happen when watching. Everyone thought I was psychic.
I totally called the whole thing in 1985. I sh!t you not, I had a dream and Brad Lidge was there, and Ryan Howard and even you, Uncle Charley, you were there too!
I managed to get two tickets for the Parade...doesnt matter for me since I dont live anywhere near Philly anymore. Upside is I traded them for a Game 3 Rally Towel and copies of the Daily News and Inquirer...I think it was a fair deal.
I also appreciate the class of the Mets fans who have come here to congratulate Phillies fans and the team.
Right now, today, it seems a long way off, but this winter I flat out guarantee this site will be griping about an acquisition by the Mets and worrying about the coming season's rivalry.
Speaking of So... after the main celebration... he circled the stadium with his family and accompanying Japanese media... throwing batting gloves/wristbands etc into the crowd.

Hundreds upon hundreds of posts about the game on Beerleaguer today and praising some of the best plays, deservedly so.
Yet not a single post on what was probably the most important play of the game, the one that, to me, was the turning point: The play Utley made up the middle to cut down Bartlett at the plate in the 7th with the game tied 3-3.
no politics on beerleaguer, c'mon kids, knock it off.
i'd strongly recommend against driving tomorrow, it's going to be mayhem, with all the people and the street closings. drive to a train stop and do that.
I know we're not quite ready to move onto the hot stove yet (at least wait until after the damn parade), but the Marlins have started making moves. We won't have Mike Jacobs to worry about next year, but we will have to deal with Leo Nunez, a right-handed relief pitcher who throws in the mid-90s.
Timmy got me thinking (I know, I know, but I swear, I'm not feeding the troll).
This actually is OUR championship. It's not the players'. Sure, they were the people who physically won it for us, but even the most dim-witted athlete has to know that without fans, he would not be paid millions of dollars to do what he does (although judging by the stories of players who blow off children with autograph requests, maybe I'm giving them too much credit. But I digress).
Sports would not exist without fans, because sports are, above all, businesses. Businesses are run with an eye on profit, and keeping the customer happy is one of the easiest ways to keep making a profit. Savvy owners should recognize when they have passionate fanbases, and should work to reward that fanbase--I say "should" because I live in Miami and since everyone who's ever met me knows what a die-hard fan I am, I've had to listen to Marlins fans complain about firesales. Anyway, a spokesman for MLB even admitted the league is happy the Phillies won, because Phillies fans are going to spend way more than Rays fans ever would. Witness the lines at Modell's today.
So, to repeat, my point is this: this is actually our championship. They did this for us. Because if it weren't for me, and my family, and my friends, and all of the Beerleaguer posters, and the millions of other Phillies fans out there, this team would not exist, would have no reason to exist. That's why we can take pride in this. That's why people came up to me today to congratulate me.
Finally (sorry, I can't resist): it strikes me that perhaps the most pathetic person of all is the one who has absolutely nothing better to do with his time than to seek out a website and attempt to mock the posters there. People who genuinely do not like or do not understand sports ignore them completely--like the professor who asked me who was playing and where the games were when I told him I would be missing class because I had World Series tickets.
1950
1964
1980 (midpoint/high point of '76-'83)
1993
2008
The timing of the Phillies' World Series appearances is amazingly consistent if you give them credit for '64 -- gaps of 13 to 16 years from peak to peak. So I'm guessing the next great Phillies team will peak about 2022, which we older boomers might not be around to see.
That's one reason this championship is especially sweet. Another is the way it was accomplished -- just one loss in each series, with nearly everyone playing some part and exhibiting an impressive solidarity (I particularly enjoyed their successful demand that the reserves and relief pitchers be introduced pre-game).
I'm glad I was wrong about having enough pitching.
Frank Fitzpatrick (my money for the worst columnist at a major Philly newspaper) to to go to the same well over and over again about the suspect behavior of Philly Sports Fans. By and large, the crowds were incredibly well-behaved at the ballpark and through out the city. Very sporadic/limited reports of any kind of real misbehavior.
You sir are a clown and it is a shame that Mr. Fitzpatrick has a column when so many more talented writers have lost their jobs the last 5 years.
The Philadelphia Phillies have beaten the Tampa Bay Rays & have WON the 2008 World Series & are baseball’s 2008 World Champions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That sounds almost surreal, but it’s oh so real!!!
Thanks to everyone on the site – just a great place to discuss, bitch, complain & now for the 1st time – CONGRATULATE!!!!
Just wanted to post a note here for all you out-of-state Beerleaguers:
If you're buying World Series gear, buy from Modell's. There's free 2-day shipping and no tax in most states. Saved me $10 on my cap and t-shirt vs. MLB.com
I could post all about last night, and how awesome the atmosphere was at Mad River in Chicago (anybody there last night), but it would take forever and I'm exhausted. Greatest feeling in my life, I couldn't stop smiling all day long.
"And biggest of all, to my mind, the incredibly alert play by Chase Utley to nab Bartlett in his attempt to steal a run. It occurred to me that Utley may have seen it coming because it was a play he would have no doubt tried to make happen himself were he on the bases."
Granted, it was an absurdly long post, but I wrote it in there last night. So there's a word or two for you.
BleuHen.......If I had an extra I would hlp you out but the 2nd ticket is taken.

Mike the Mets Fan and other gracious Mets fans, a sincere thank you for your congratulations, and may the NL East stay competitive.

I just went through this thread and amazed at to see the number of IDs I recognized, IDs I hadn't seen in a while, and totally new ones.
Congrats to JW for an excellent season of Beerleaguer! Wish I was going to be at the parade tomorrow.

Congratulations to all. We earned it!

Kind of amazing when you take the long view:
1950

One thing that didn't change with the World Series victory though:
http://www.philly.com/philly/hp/sports/33562334.html
Frank Fitzpatrick (my money for the worst columnist at a major Philly newspaper) to to go to the same well over and over again about the suspect behavior of Philly Sports Fans. By and large, the crowds were incredibly well-behaved at the ballpark and through out the city. Very sporadic/limited reports of any kind of real misbehavior.
You sir are a clown and it is a shame that Mr. Fitzpatrick has a column when so many more talented writers have lost their jobs the last 5 years.

Greatest feeling in my life, I couldn't stop smiling all day long.

clout, I guess you missed this:
"And biggest of all, to my mind, the incredibly alert play by Chase Utley to nab Bartlett in his attempt to steal a run. It occurred to me that Utley may have seen it coming because it was a play he would have no doubt tried to make happen himself were he on the bases."
Granted, it was an absurdly long post, but I wrote it in there last night. So there's a word or two for you.
