Is this thing on?

Cubs win.

Walk off single for Derek Lee, Cubs beat the Brewers 7-6.

That's a pretty brutal, Mets-like loss, giving up 4 in the 9th and then losing in extra innings.

CJ - Thanks for the note about Happ and Gordon. Very Brewer-like as well.

Both the Mets and Phils have their aces on the mound against back-end teams. Lefties murder Hampton. Let's hope ours get the job done tonight.

Devastating for the Brewers, blew the lead, and then had runners on second and third in the top of the 12th with no outs and were unable to score a run. Hopefully this loss keeps the Brewers down for the rest of the season.

Man, talk about a Brewer choke fest, giving up 4 runs in the 9th w/ two outs and they had runners on 2nd and 3rd no outs in the 12th. No love for the Brew Crew at all.

four runs with two out and nobody on, no less. Crazy.

Lineups are posted. No changes from the last two days. At least Pedro Feliz warrants a start tonight.

Ah, good point Sophist.

Although RHB hit 286 off Hampton this year, LHP hit a whopping 366 off him this year. Granted... it's a much smaller sample size (only 47 PA vs. 208).

In his career, the splits are virtually similar for BA and OBP, but LHB slug slightly better.

Man the Brewers sure have sucked...they should fire their manager...oh wait.

From the last thread: I'm pretty sure Happ's eligible for the postseason roster.

NEPP: Even if he's not now, he would be because Tom Gordon is on the 60-day DL and JA Happ could replace him on any 25 man playoff roster the Phils would present.

I thought that if you were on the 25 man at any point prior to 1 Sept, you could be placed on the PS roster...as Happ was up earlier in the year that would make him eligible even without the injury backdoor. Good, we'll need him if we make it.

NEPP - I couldn't find a clear statement of the rule re: 25-man and postseason rosters. The one I found said the player much be on the 25-man as of August 31st.

Ahh...interesting Sophist. Good thing we can use the injury clause for Happ then. Otherwise Kendrick would have had to have an accident in the clubhouse.

Can anyone picture Amaro Jr. pushing KK down some stairs?

NEPP: Nope, but I could see Myers doing it.

Found it: "The rules for postseason eligibility make any player on the team’s 25-man roster or on the DL as of August 31 eligible for the postseason. The rules also allow a team to replace any player on its postseason roster who is injured and cannot play with any other player who was in the organization on August 31, and who plays the same position (the “Francisco Rodriguez” clause). "

So Sophist is correct.

sophist: I found that same rule and was puzzled by it. That would mean, for instance, that Geoff Jenkins couldn't be on the post-season roster since he was on the DL on September 1. That wouldn't break my heart, but I'm sure it isn't right. It can't be.

Stupid double post.

The Phils actually have 4 pitchers on the 60-day DL:

Gordon, Mathieson, Rosario and Zagurski

I think that gives them leeway with up to 4 pitchers, but I'm not sure. Not that it would be necessary, however, since Happ is the only one for who we'd need an injury exception. No other extra pitchers will even be considered for the post-season roster.

Getting someone like Taguchi or Marson on the postseason roster, however, would take a moving someone to the 60-day DL. For Marson, that would mean Coste or Ruiz, so that won't happen. For Taguchi, we could move Andy Tracy to the 60-day DL if we needed him.

Does Marson even bother to put a uniform on for games anymore...he's got about as much chance of getting in the game as Roger Dorn in Major League 2.

A player who is on the DL on Aug. 31st and had been on the 25-man roster prior to that time IS eligible for the postseason roster. That means Geoff Jenkins qualifies.

For Iguchi, who would you give up off the bench? I assume Taguchi and they don't play the same position so it wouldn't work. It would have to be Bruntlett and he's too versatile to give up in a playoff situation...defensively not offensively.

For that matter how do they determine position eligibility for a replacement? Is it like fantasy baseball or does IF equal IF and OF equal OF?

Ok, never mind. NEPP cleared it up.

BAP - Yeah. That rule didn't really answer any of my burning questions either. It's not definitive. I found it on wiki. Maybe MLB.com has a better description.

Ok,Mets fans here. I know everyone on this blog hates the Mets and their fans, but I think we can all agree that the video posted by NEPP of the Mets fans playing beer cup Jenga on that guy's head is really funny.

I don't hate the Mets or their fans though I do find the latter somewhat annoying sometimes. :) That video is awesome though...I found it on Fark.com BTW.

On the rule...I'm looking for the actual rule still...Wikipedia has failed me so far though.

Are we talking about Iguchi or Taguchi? Iguchi was not with the team on 8-31, so he definitely cannot be on the post-season roster. Taguchi can be, although I'd rather give his spot to Stairs. The other thing to remember, too, is that you really don't need a 7-man bullpen in the playoffs. Even if it's So Taguchi, I'd rather have the last roster spot go to an extra bat off the bench than to Rudy Seanez.

NEPP: "I don't hate the Mets or their fans."

NEPP: You're a fine BL contributor, but I find that comment to be deeply offensive.

Okay, okay... I've got this all figured out:

A player must be on the 25 man roster on Aug. 31st or on the DL at that time to be eligible for the postseason roster. However, any player who falls under that qualification who is also on the 60-day DL can be replaced for the purposes of a postseason roster. A pitcher would have to be replaced by a pitcher and a position player would have to be replaced by a position player, although their positions would not match up.

Here are the players eligible for the postseason roster:

Pitchers: Blanton, Condrey, Durbin, Eyre, Hamels, Kendrick, Lidge, Madson, Moyer, Myers, Romero, Seanez, Gordon (60-day), Mathieson (60-day), Rosario (60-day), Zagurski (60-day)

Position players: Coste, Ruiz, Bruntlett, Dobbs, Feliz, Howard, Rollins, Tracy (15-day), Utley, Burrell, Jenkins, Taguchi, Victorino, Werth

I assumed Iguchi because who in their right mind would care about Taguchi on the postseason roster? I'd take Stairs over Taguchi as well and I assume they will.

Five words guys, Don't look ahead of yourselves. I know during a winning streak its sweet, and you feel like you can't lose, but it always ends. I didn't come in here to be like some Mets fans and talk smack, or badmouth, but I know what it feels like to think you have this thing, and its not fun when you lose it all. Lets make it a great last 10 days guys. May the best team win :)

(added Stairs, mistakenly left him off)

***NEPP: You're a fine BL contributor, but I find that comment to be deeply offensive.***

Don't get me wrong BAP, I can't stand the Mets or their fans...I find both to be the most annoying thing on earth, but I save my hate for other things. That's all.

I'm actually not positive on Andy Tracy... he wasn't put on the DL until September. His last game in August was on the 26th. Does anyone know if he was sent down and then called back up with the Sept. call ups?

Tracy was sent down on the 27th and recalled on the 2nd...thus not eligible by the above rules.

Name me one Philly fan that thinks we have this thing locked up, and I'll show you someone who isn't a real Philly fan. If anything, we suffer from eternal pessimism and look for the bad in everything.

Schmidt said it best: "Philadelphia is the only city, where you can experience the thrill of victory and the agony of reading about it the next day."

Mets lead. Lead off double for Reyes than a single by Murphy who gets to third on an error. No outs, 1-0.

can we stop with the post season roster talk? I cant think of a bigger jinx than that.

game has started

Boston used to be like that till 2004. Decades and decades of heartbreak and futility will do that to a fanbase...a good one anyway.

We could be up 10 runs in the bottom of the 9th of the clinching game of the world series and I'd still be convinced that we'd somehow blow it.

Position players: Coste, Ruiz, Bruntlett, Dobbs, Feliz, Howard, Rollins, Utley, Burrell, Jenkins, Stairs, Taguchi, Victorino, Werth

This is the OFFICIAL list, as determined by the smart commentors collectively at Beerleaguer. Up to four pitchers not on this list could be added to the postseason roster due to the pitchers on the 60-day DL, but any position player not on this list could only be added if an injury is invented for someone already on the list.

Great start! Way to go Werth.

I love Jayson Werth.

werthalicious

"Boston used to be like that till 2004. Decades and decades of heartbreak and futility will do that to a fanbase...a good one anyway."

Oh dear. I hope that doesn't mean that a little success in the postseason would turn us all into relentless jerks.

Great NEWS! Mets fail to get runner home from third with no outs. Wright K's, Delgado pops out, Beltran pops out.

If you're a LHP, Werth is basically Howard.

That's Werthtastic!!!

Good point by the Braves announcers, Werth may as well be considered for MVP the way he has played this last month.

another worthless rbi for howard

2-0 phils

phargo: Who knows if that'll happen to Phils' fans? But I'd love the opportunity to find out...

Nice job, Ryno. Get him in. It's what the Mets heart of the order just failed to do.

man burrell just looks worse and worse

Anyone else with MLBtv having problems with the PhilaCast contrast?

Down 1-2, I didn't think Howard would be able to drive that run in. I must still think it's June.

Why didn't Cox walk Howard and face Burrell? I guess it's because of Howard's SO.

Meaningless Sac Fly...RBIs suck.

If this was April or May, he would have struck out there.

Philly Blunt - The away feed hasn't been working for me for the first inning or so the last few nights. Audio will be in and out, it will start as the Astros' game, etc.. It's been taking some innings for it to right itself.

My feed started as a Astros feed tonight. Just switched to the Braves feed, and haven't checked back yet.

PhillyBlunt:

For the last few days, MLB.tv has had the wrong feed or no feed at all for the Phils home feed. I'm not sure what's wrong.

Hamels doens't look sharp. On the pitches he's missing on, he's missing badly. That pitch would have been out of CBP.

Wow... lucky, lucky, lucky play by Hamels.

Is Cole getting squeezed or is he just sucking today?

PBlunt - my away feed is working now. It just switched.

Schneider bomb, 2-0 Mets.

Cole's location wasn't there in the first.

Santana double, Reyes single, 3-0 Mets.

damn you tim redding - sucking against everyone but the phillies

chooch! just eating up September!

chooch

Nice Chooch, c'mon Cole help your own cause!

Who is this guy? Ruiz?

after reading all the RBI stat arguing on this blog I tried to create a Expected RBI vs Actual RBI Ratio stat - got kind of complicated but definitely a good possiblity of a great stat to measure driving in runs

Come back, Cole

Jeezus, why did bad Cole have to show up?

Doesn't look sharp at all...Gotta wonder if that workload is really starting to take its toll.

I posted this yesterday. Hamels has lost and ended two of this teams longest winning streaks of the year.

Ribbies: Because we needed good Cole.
I'm sorry, he's got a lot of talent, and he has pitched a lot of innings this season, but he hasn't learned how to handle the big game yet. You come in with a 2-run lead; if you want to be the ace, you need to have a shut down inning.

I don't want to trade him, and I think he can be the ace we're looking for some day, but he's just not that guy yet. I know he's young, but I just don't see it in him yet.

MVP and gold glove?

:)

Howard is angling for another record-breaking arbitration award ...

The Braves will be extra motivated tonight to not have the Phillies go 9-0 on them at Turner Field, which has never been done before.

Bats need to pick up Hamels. Anything less than a sweep here, against a weak team with a declining ver pitcher, with Hamels on the mound this late in the season is unacceptable.

Hamels-toe is a Vag.

It will be interesting to see if Cole can pull it together on a night when he clearly doesn't have it. I don't really buy the argument he's getting worn down, only because he's been pitching fine for the most part and there's been no gradual dropping off.

I think Chase has already gotten his hit for the game.

Dancin' Reyes report: 2-2 double, RBI

Random thoughts: Ryan Howard knows how to get a guy home from 3rd with a sac, why can the middle of the Mets order not get a guy home from 3rd with NO OUTS??

Ryan Zimmerman is incredible at 3rd base, he's made 2 gold glove web gems in 2 innings!

Nat's D is horrible tonight. Looks like Milly and Dukes hit tha clubs last night..

Um, Cole Hamels can only be defeated by green magic and poison arrows.

5-0 mets: you know what they say about early NYM leads - the bigger they are, the harder the fall

I wonder if Utley's hip injury wears him down over the course of the game. Lately it seems like he always gets a hit in his first or second at bat and nothing after that.

chooch you're the man

2-1 Fish. I know the Marlins are playing pretty well lately, but I wonder how much it's the Astros just totally collapsing after playing at such a high level for so long. Some have been displaced by the Hurricane and might have their minds on other things besides baseball, no?

redding with the early hook

Well, against any other team Redding vs. their topline starter is not a fair match for the Nats. It's just the Phils that make him look unhittable. Guy must love facing the Fightins'.

Yea cause the "Fightins" suck. You're lucky they have no more games with the Mets

6-0. You know it's a crazy night when Brian Schneider hits 2 dingers..

Yes, because there are no mediocre pitchers that stifle the Mets, like, say Randy Wolf for instance.

Last I checked the Mets have their own blog...why not go post there?

Zimmerman with his 3rd robbery of the game.

nice hit feliz
