I hate Charles Fuqua Manuel. He's a bumbling backwood bumpkin that is nothing more than a hitting instructor. He should never have been given the Phils job. Now is the perfect time to hand him his walking papers. It can't get any worse, and we might as well try a new skipper to see if it can actually get better.

The really sad part about this is that Charlie just bought himself a few more weeks. The Phillies will NOT fire Manuel now and let it appear that Eskin got him fired. Appearances matter more than results and they will just hunker down in their bunker and keep saying that things will get better.

Personally, as someone who played the game into his 30's, and has been a full season ticket holder since 1992, if they do not fire Manuel in the next 24 hours I am done.

I can't quit the Phillies. They're in my blood. I know that sounds corny, but that's how much I live and die with this organization. That's why I'm so pissed off right now. "Things will get better"...bullsh*t! "It's a marathon not a sprint"...bullsh*t! Quit giving me a bunch of played out sayings to try and solace me, it's not working. The only thing that will work is if changes are made and winning starts happening.

I think this is the beginning of the final Phillies chapter in Cholly's biography. The vultures smell blood and are starting to circle overhead. There a plenty of guys that are smart managerial types that could lead this club better. In their spare time, the Phillies sportswriters are beginning to assemble lists of possible successors. Stay tuned.

When shopping for groceries next week, will we see Cholly's angry face on the cover of the Enquirer saying "We will win!"?

the worst thing about this, is now eskin is going to take some credit for the firing.

Chase Utley needs to concentrate on saving the offense rather than the Ozone Layer. Ryan Howard needs to worry about "contact" not "contract". C'mon fellas...we need to play as a team!

i can't believe this is even a story. eskin does this type of thing for a living. it is a sad state of affairs when Philadelphia Newspapers Inc files half a dozen stories on something like this 3 weeks into the season.

as for ken mandel, doesn't he basically write as an employee of MLB? of course he's goign to slant his story on the side of the team.

fire charlie if you want, but what solutions do you expect it will provide? the team will suddenly pick things up? didn't they do that last year and the year before -- under manuel?

canning charlie is a 'quick fix' to a much deeper problem.

GR- what kind of solution is keeping Manuel?

Sure firing him is a "quick fix" if it actually fixes anything at all. Bottom line the team isn't winning with him...people get fired for that kind of stuff. I don't expect some miraculous turn around once Manuel is axed, as I know the problem is deeply rooted. But why not shake things up and started by making the change of manager?

The video is up:

http://video.nbc10.com/player/?id=0 under “WCAU, SPORTS, Local Sports Video, Manuel Explodes, Challenges Eskin.”

Noticed Rowand's comments in the linked story above. To paraphrase, he basically said "We know CM's angry..he doesn't have to yell at us for us to know he's unhappy. We haven't played well, and we have to start doing better".
Well, Aaron, perhaps CM does have to yell at you once in a while. Maybe he does have to show disgust in the dugout once in a while. Maybe he should walk out on the field and change a player once in a while when the player is not earning his keep. Maybe he shouldn't care so damn much about all the egos in the clubhouse and demand some performance, with the clear message that there are consequences when the performance isn't there.
But that's never going to happen because that just isn't CM's way. He'll yell at an irrelevant media hack, but not at players who have yet to break a sweat since the start of spring training.

Usually when a group of people get a boss that is really easy on them, (but bad for the company) they will do just enough to make sure the boss doesn't get into trouble or get fired. Otherwise they do nothing.
Expect the team to play well for a couple of weeks to try to keep CM here. They don't want a new manager who might actually demand excellence and who will call bulls**t on what many of them think passes for being a major league baseball player.

I feel bad for Manuel. Its not right that he's going to possibly lose his job over this Bullshit. Howard Eskin should have been run out of this town along time ago. He's a jerk. And he completley Baited Manuel. Charlie deserves to not be the manager for alot of reasons, but this isn't one of them. But since a-holes on WIP get to keep their jobs for years because for some reason the fan base embraces complete and utter conjecture, Eskin will continue to be an a-hole for years to come.

I don't really care if Manuel is fired or not, because they real problem is David Montogomery and Bill Giles and someone has to finally start saying it.

The other teams in that city, you can usually blame the player, the gm, or manager, cus because the championship might be elusive but at least the Jeff Lurie and Ed Snider put together Contending Organizations(the sixers get a pass because its basketball and thats just a screwy sport to compete in) while these to a-clowns consistently find a way to squander the talent they do have and make absolutely abhorent F-A signings that are in an effort to save money. Maybe if they didn't let the farm system go to pieces, we wouldn't have to be signing guys like rod barajas. Why the heck did we get rid of Todd Pratt if were going to sign Rod Barajas? WHy do we constantly get rid of players and the simply resign another player EXACTLY LIKE THEM

This Ownership needs to be put on notice. Let's try and get Cuban to make an offer quick, before he buys the cubs. He might be kind of an a-hole too, but at least that guy cares about the type of teams his managers put together and btw, makes money hand over fist while putting together a contending team.

what makes me the most angry is the fact that i get upset about a team that I am supposed to enjoy watching. I live in Chicago and usually am bummed that i don't get to watch many(if any) phils games on tv, but this year, I can't say that I'm upset i missed any of this.

So a reporter asked a follow up question and that is baiting?? it was a legtimate question and the manager curses him and challenges him to a fight? He can't even control himself how can he control this team. Charlie is the face of this baseball team. This grown ass man threatening, cursing, and charging at a reporter is the face of this baseball team! The Phillies have lost all their dignity and that's on top of losing most their games. They won't make changes though because they care more about loyalty to their personnel than to the fans and to the quality of their product.

"shake things up". if there's a lamer, more nebulous phrase in sports than this, i've never heard it.

while it sounds like a rational argument on paper, the problem is, people have been calling for charlie's head since his first day in the clubhouse. its always been based on his nature and public speaking problems. now that the team is playing poorly, firing him is an easy drum to beat, but it remains a disengenuous one. people have spewed nonesense about him from the start because they don't like him, but hiding behind reasons they picked up along the way is a big sham.

no one's saying he's a great manager they need to keep, but the 'fire charlie' hysteria is just too much to take anymore. it shows up in comments like "I hate Charles Fuqua Manuel." it sounds eerily parallel to what is generously labeled as "content" coming out of trashbins like WIP.

at most, he's a distraction from the real problems at this point. the coaching staff brought in by gillick certainly hasn't contributed anything. the offseason patchwork moves have been underwhelming to say the least. the two best hitters on the team look lost. go ahead, pin those on the manager, we all will await that flawless reasoning.

if you want manuel fired, the best reason is to shine a light on the real problems in south philadelphia. organization, personnel, culture. all need an overhaul.

GR- How is it that I'm pinning all the problems on Manuel. I've said many times that he is only part of the problem, not the whole damn thing. Ok, so my "shake things up" comment is as played out as some of the other lame-ass ones like "it's a marathon not a sprint" and the rest of the collective bullsh*t. You are right though, I never liked Manuel. I was pissed he was hired. Every single mistake he's made since taking over has just added fuel to my fire. I just don't understand the purpose in keeping him anymore, as he's showing to be worthless!

I AMEN mm right on the button !

Now how would everyone feel if Pinella, or Francona, or Bowa were manager and we were 3-9?

We would be screaming the exact same thing. We are 3-9 because our two young stars are being walked every single time, and we have not been able to adjust.

We think the manager is the magic medicine, Gillick love him or hate him has removed the financial straight jack that Wade serving the gang of 12 put us in. Yes we need to trade for a Cordero, yes we need to get the deadwood off the relief corp so we can try out some new arms, yes we have to fix the bench. We need to make trades to fix these things. Wade would have no chance of doing that, Gillick is able to try.

Manuel should go if there is someone fresh, not a retread, or a proven winner, but he is not the main reason we are 3-9.

Our main offseason aquisition Garia has had one start, and Myers without a Curt Shilling to kick his butt and mentor him is pitching like a 3rd grader. Would Myers be pitching better if Pinella was throwing chairs at him? You all know the answer to that.

I feel your pain. The first team I rooted for at age 8 was the 1964 Phillies. So suck it up baby boomers babies. Yes there is a curse, but put the positive vibe out there and hope Gillick can pull off a trade for a reliever, and clean up the bench in May. Our Organization has Centerfielders coming out of their ears. So we have things to trade. We need Castro up to have another lefty in the pen we need to let Lieber go and Madson needs to go to the minors for a month if he is lost on waivers good luck to him.

Love you all phellow phillies phanatic who are phed up phor good reason. It is bigger than poor Charlie.

My suggestion for manager is PETE ROSE.

For those of you who don't really follow baseball and the ownership side of things. Mark Cuban will NEVER be a major league baseball owner. The owners vote on who becomes an owner and someone like Mark Cuban will never be allowed in the club.
