The Pirates can turn a seven-game losing streak into a three-game winning streak this afternoon if they get past Gavin Floyd, who enters the game with a 8.50 ERA.
Floyd is coming off a game in which he gave up seven runs in 3 1-3 innings to Colorado. After the game, readers wondered how long Floyd would stay in the starting rotation if he continued to struggle.
He will face another beleaguered starter in Oliver Perez, the third starter the Phillies have faced with an ERA over 7.00. That has meant nothing, however, as the Phillies have scored only one earned run off a Pirates starter this series.
The Phillies offense is in the midst of a home run drought from their primary power threats. Chase Utley has not homered since April 14 at Colorado. Pat Burrell last hit one April 18, Bobby Abreu last homered on April 19 and Ryan Howard has been held homerless since April 23. In addition, Mike Lieberthal has not homered this season and Jimmy Rollins only has one.
----- After yesterday’s 0-fer, Rollins’ OPS sank to .666, lowest among the regulars. David Bell is next with a .697.
---- Sal Fasano will likely start this afternoon. He is the team’s best bench hitter (.231 BA).
----- The Phils are still tied for second in the division with Atlanta (9-14), The Braves have lost five-straight games.
