The Phillies whittled down their bullpen today by optioning Yoel Hernandez and reassigning Aquilino Lopez to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes Barre.
Hernandez and Lopez, both right-handers, were considered to have outside shots at making the opening day roster, but had inconsistent springs and melted down in recent outings.
In eight innings, Hernandez allowed six earned runs and seven walks in posting a 6.75 spring ERA. Lopez, owner of 14 career saves, pitched 9 1-3 innings, allowing five earned runs and three walks for a 5.79 ERA. He also fanned 11 batters.
Chris Booker, Robinson Tejeda, Eude Brito and Ricardo Rodriguez remain in the hunt for the final bullpen position. Rodriguez is believed to have the inside track.
In addition, Cole Hamels was officially reassigned to minor league camp.
Beerleaguer take: Middle relief is a frightening situation.
