Rookie Ian Snell, who entered the game 0-2 with a 6.84 ERA and no career wins, shut out Houston over eight innings, leading the Pirates to a 7-0 victory over Roger Clemens and the Astros.
With the loss, the Astros cling to a one game lead over the Phillies in the Wild Card standings.
The 23-year-old Snell allowed just three hits and stuck out five for his first career win. Before tonight, he hadn’t lasted more than five innings and was previously 0-3 with a 12.38 ERA in four career starts.
Clemens, of 340 career wins, lost to Pittsburgh for the first time in six starts. The Rocket scattered 11 hits and four earned runs over 5 2-3 innings.
Beerleaguer take
The Phillies needed help, and they got it. Hopefully, it's enough to take the wind out of the Astros' sails and send a charge back into the Phils as they begin their series in Atlanta.

yes, i get by with a little help from my friends!

The Astros are one of those teams perfectly capable of stringing together 7-8 wins in a row. And losing 7-8 in a row. You can't tell with them. IMHO, if the Phils win 9 of their last 14 games, we win. 8, and we'll probably tie, with a playoff. 7 will not get us there.

i definitely met ian snell in pittsburgh over july 4th weekend. he happened to be staying at the same hotel as a wedding i was in. funny kid. real cocky. it was enjoyable to see him get such a big win.
of course, i met him because a friend brought him up to the hotel room, effectively blocking my buddy and i from getting any with a couple of drunk girls so maybe i shouldn't be such a big fan. then again, the girls weren't the most attractive... then again, maybe i've said too much.
